Experiencing TUMI for the 1st Time!

johnkhor.com has the privilege to review one of TUMI’s famous line of luggage, The Alpha2 Collection. Before I dwell into the technical aspects of the luggage, let’s go through the history of TUMI for those of you who are not familiar with the brand.

TUMI is famous for its design excellence, technical innovation, functional superiority, technical innovation, the highest in class quality and outstanding service. Founded in 1975 in New Jersey, USA, the owner names the company after a Peruvian ceremonial knife used for sacrifices. It targets the high end markets and has more than 125 stores all over the world such as Tokyo, Paris, London and so on.

Since the technicalities can be found in its website, I will just share my views and experience after toying with it for a while. Too bad I don’t have any business trips, if not, I will be glad to bring it out for a field test! 🙂

The first thing I notice when I receive the luggage bag is the build quality. I can almost feel the care and details that the company put into their luggage bags. The luggage bag feels solid yet light.

I also notice that the corners of the bag are well protected. The logic is simple as the corners of our bags are the easiest place to be damaged especially when your bag is very heavy. After digging some information, I find out that TUMI has a patent-pending Durafold construction method that folds and reinforces the corners with heavy-duty stitching and impact-resistant caps.

When you pull the luggage, you will feel the difference immediately. The quality is there as compared with my free luggage bags from credit card companies. It is so easy to move them around. It is TUMI new designed wheels that are recessed into the body of the luggage case giving them a lower center of gravity for stable multidirectional navigation and a more spacious interior compared to carry-on bags with surface mounted wheels. There’s a saying don’t be penny wise but pound-foolish. No wonder people are willing to spend a fortune to get these bags!

This feature is always a welcome. It really helps to hold our extra small bags on top of the luggage securely.

This luggage bag also features New Lever LockTM Expansion System which enables the luggage bag to expand up to two and a half extra inches of packing space! Sound like Transformers to me! Haha 🙂 It uses patent-pending easy-to- use spring-loaded levers to open and close securely.

One thing that piqued my interest is the TUMI Tracer®. Each Alpha2 bag has a unique registration number permanently affixed to the outside of the bag. It features easy-to-find directions on how to reunite the lost or stolen bag with their registered owners. How convenient!

All in all, this is feature-packed luggage. You need to take time to understand more of its feature to fully appreciate this bag. It is definitely a very high quality luggage bag. If money is not a big problem for me, I will probably consider this bag too. Not many are able to splurge a few thousands for their luggage bags. For those who can, I strongly suggest you to check this TUMI brand. I find that the design and outlook of this bag can be further improved to attract those with higher fashion sense.
